Child development / Drama games / High medium low

High, Medium, Low is a fun and creative game that helps children build spatial awareness and express themselves through movement.

Through playful challenges, kids explore high, medium and low poses and movements. It's perfect for drama, dance and learning to tell stories with their bodies.

This is a great warm-up activity that encourages children to think creatively while moving with purpose and control.

How to play

1. Ask each child to invent three frozen poses:

  • One high up (arms stretched, on tiptoes)
  • One medium height (standing pose)
  • One low down (on the floor)

2. Designate spots in the room to strike the poses

Next, ask the group to choose three different spots in the room where they'll strike their poses (for example, the right-hand corner is the spot for high poses!)

3. Run and pose

Call out "HIGH!", "MEDIUM!" or "LOW!" and the children must run to the correct spot and strike their chosen pose.

4. Now, ask the children to find a way of moving to each pose:

  • A high way of moving (e.g. tiptoe skipping)
  • A medium way of moving (e.g. walking or marching)
  • A low way of moving (e.g. crawling or sliding)

5. Move between levels

Practise moving between levels using the right movement and pose.

6. Introduce a simple story setting

To take the game to the next level, try introducing a simple story setting (e.g. a jungle, a castle, outer space) and invite the children to weave their movements and poses into a short sequence based on the setting. Try adding sounds to bring the movements to life!

What it teaches

  • Physical control - exploring levels, speed and energy
  • Imagination - creating expressive shapes and movements
  • Spatial awareness - navigating space safely and intentionally
  • Storytelling - expressing narrative through movement
  • Memory and sequencing - remembering and repeating physical patterns

Variations to try

  • Freeze challenge: Try to trick them by saying "LOW!" but pausing - do they freeze or move?
  • Partner version: Children work in pairs to mirror each other's level changes
  • Music-led levels: Use different styles of music for high, medium and low sections

Principal's notes

This is a wonderful game for developing physical storytelling. It blends energy and imagination with structure and children love creating their own movements and mini-performances.
